Now before we dive into the actual nerf blasters themselves. We should cover some key points in which Nerf blasters are fun, easy to use, and most importantly, safe for 5 year olds.

Let’s break down some important factors to look for when buying a Nerf gun (in no particular order).

Durability

Anyone with small kids knows that things break, and boy can they break quickly! There is nothing quite like spending money on an exciting new toy only to have it seemingly self-destruct within minutes! Unbelievable!

Definitely take into consideration the build quality. If there’s a lot of small parts, or parts that stick out from the main body, these will likely be the first things to break off. Just like toys for us adults, the more moving parts there are, the greater chance for things to fail.

Size

Size is an important feature to look at when purchasing a Nerf blaster for your 5-year-old. A lot of the exciting looking Nerf blasters on the market today are huge! They have batteries, giant nerf dart magazines, attachments and so on. These will be enormous, and heavy! Save these giant blasters for when they get older.

Your child should be easily able to carry their new blaster with one hand and maybe a 2nd hand to steady the blaster during shooting.

Safety

Nothing would be worse than buying a blaster that will hurt your child. Always educate your kids on safe use and to never shoot near the eyes. It’s important to note the age ratings displayed just like all toys with potential choking hazards before buying. While these are recommended age ranges, ultimately it comes down to you, the parent in deciding which toy is appropriate. These age recommendations help you rule out blasters with small parts, too heavy, too hard to use, or use nerf balls instead of darts.

The Nerf blasters we will show below have a small range of age groups shown to help size up which one may be right for you.

Ease of Use

Just like with safety concerns, shopping within the recommended age range will narrow your shopping down to blasters without complicated shooting mechanisms. Most Nerf blasters have some sort of charging/priming mechanism that prepares the blaster to shoot, much like some pistols and revolvers have a hammer to cock before firing the first round.

Nerf does a great job of keeping blasters meant for kids to be easy to use, but keep this in mind when shopping as it may come down to the strength and ability of your child.

So what are the Best Nerf Guns for my 5 Year Old?

Looking at the available Nerf guns, I noticed age recommendations start at 3+ and mostly jump up to an 8+ age, leaving a gap in the 4-7 year old range. This kind of leaves the basic guns to kids that could possibly use a bigger blaster. I’ll show you some options that cover the entire age range above, but you’ll need to use some judgment as to which will be a good fit for your child.

Parenting Tip:

If you'll be arming your kids with Nerf guns, be prepared for battle and get one for yourself! Get a Nerf sniper rifle or Nerf machine gun and don't let them get the upper hand!

Liberty Imports Mini Foam Dart Blasters Multi Pack

Liberty Imports Mini Foam Dart Blasters Multi Pack Party Favors (Set of 6)
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to use
  • Nice variety of colors and styles
  • Not compatible with Nerf darts
  • Durability may be an issue

While not Nerf branded, these small single shot blasters are great for younger kids. Did someone say Nerf party!? These are a great, affordable option for party favors. These come in a 6 pack and each blaster comes with 6 darts. I wouldn't stress about durability here, these are cheap enough that if a few break, it won't take your checking account down with it.

These small blasters are pretty durable and shoot 10-20ft. They also come in 3 different colors and 3 different styles, something to suit everyone.

Best Nerf Guns for Ages 5+

Avengers Marvel Infinity War Nerf Star-Lord Assembler Gear

Avengers Marvel Infinity War Nerf Star-Lord Assembler Gear
  • Can be configured into unique blasters
  • Awesome Avengers theme
  • Only 3 darts included
  • High risk of breaking or losing pieces.

This unique looking blaster is great for an Avengers fan. This blaster fires about 10-15ft with the included darts (3). This can be configured in many different ways for a unique look. While this set is rated for ages 5+, it seems like this could break easily.

Marvel Guardians of The Galaxy Rocket Raccoon Blaster

Marvel Guardians of The Galaxy Rocket Raccoon Blaster
  • Fires up to 25ft
  • Replacement darts are easy to get
  • Flimsy hand guard. Luckily this can be removed

This Nerf blaster is one of the larger blasters available with an age rating of 5+. The nice thing about this gun is that it’s got a longer range and shoots standard Nerf-N-Strike Elite darts so you can easily get replacements if needed. Kids will surely have fun with this Rocket Raccoon Blaster.

Best Nerf Blasters for Ages 8+

Nerf N-Strike Elite Jolt Blaster

Nerf N-Strike Elite Jolt Blaster (Green)
  • Very small
  • Long range
  • Won’t jam
  • The plunger may be difficult to operate for some kids

If you’re looking for a tiny blaster that packs a punch, this one is it. Small enough to fit in a pocket but shoot 30-40ft. Its single shot action ensures jam-free shooting. The only issue I potentially see is the ability for a child to pull down the plunger at the bottom to ready the blaster.

Nerf MicroShots N-Strike Elite Strongarm

Nerf MicroShots N-Strike Elite Strongarm
  • Built on the Nerf Jolt platform
  • Good shooting range
  • As with the Jolt, younger kids may have issues pulling down the plunger to charge the weapon.

This mini Nerf blaster is essentially a Jolt blaster reskin, meaning the functionality of shooting is the same as the Jolt. The plunger on the bottom may be hard for kids below 8 years old to pull. You may also notice that this is a mini version of the Nerf Elite Strongarm but this is only for looks, however. This will still be a great blaster. If you like the Jolt but want something more “fun looking” for your kids, this may be for you.

Summary

Nerf battles can be a great way to play with your kids and tire them out, especially on a rainy day indoors. Always teach your kids the proper way to use Nerf guns. These are very safe toys, however at the same time, you don't want them thinking they can just blast each other in the heads and risk an eye injury.

Use your best judgement when buying the proper blaster. These small blasters I've covered above are simple, and cheap. I know it's tempting to buy the big, cool, Nerf blaster that holds 20 darts, but save those for when they get older!
